| 1. January of 2020 the Iowa Medical Cannabidiol Board recommended the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services obtain a federal exemption for Iowa’s medical cannabis program to protect schools, and long-term and acute care facilities that receive federal funding. |
| 2. September of 2020 the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services agreed to apply for a federal exemption for Iowa’s medical cannabis program, but hasn’t made any progress since then. |
| 3. August of 2022 the department said, “ a lot of people need to be involved in making sure that’s handled in a way that’s fine with everybody.” |
| 4. January of 2023 the Iowa Medical Cannabidiol Board recommended a legal task force to assist the department in making the application. |
| 5. 21 U.S.C. § 822(d) (2020) gives the Attorney General of the United States the authority to: “waive the requirement for registration of certain manufacturers [Iowa Code §§ 124E.6, 124E.7], distributors, or dispensers [Iowa Code §§ 124E.8, 124E.9] if he finds it consistent with the public health and safety”. |
| 6. It goes without saying the Iowa Legislature thought a medical cannabis program was in the interest of public health and safety. |

Also worth reading is Governor Reynold’s veto of House File 732 in 2019. HF732 passed by 96-3 in the House and by 40-7 in the Senate. You can see that Governor Reynolds places high value on the advice of the Medical Cannabidiol Board
